Cameron Shaw: Doran of Lincoln, who three years ago at age 26 while a student at
Plymouth State University, became the first wheelchair-bound person to complete
the climb up the 7.6-mile Mt. Washington Auto Road. Shaw-Doran has been
paralyzed from the chest down since he broke his neck when he was 18. A good
friend of World Cup skier Bode Miller, Shaw-Doran is the adaptive ski coach at
Loon Mountain and a regional sales rep for upstart SoNu Beverages out of New
York City.
Colleen Macort: of Alabama works with Access Now Inc., where she is
a staunch legal advocate for those with disabilities. A past runnerup in Ms.
Wheelchair America after winning the state title in Florida, she also works at
Talladega Superspeedway. She is a consultant with a specialty in autism Asperger
syndrome dealing mainly with children. Macort, who is an incomplete paraplegic
after a tumor was removed from her spine when she was almost a year old, is a
self-described tomboy and not one to slow down. The mother of two grown boys
(and a grandmother too) she works on cars and rides a hand-controlled
four-wheeler.
Ray Paprota
Accessible Racing Director of Driver Development
Ray is a wheelchair using paraplegic. He is the first and only paraplegic driver
to compete in a NASAR Touring Series and receive a NASCAR touring series
competitors license. This barrier breaking competitor uses state of the art hand
controls to operate throttle, brakes, and steering wheel.
Paralyzed in a motor vehicle accident at the age of 21: Paprota, who is unable
to use his legs, began racing Legend Series race cars before moving up to the
larger, faster, and more competetive ISCARS touring series. He credits NASCAR
and ISCARS (formerly known as the NASCAR Goody's Dash Series) with providing an
opportunity to demonstrate his abilities in a race car rather themn focusing on
his limitations in a wheelchair. Pioneer Racing is located in the legendary race
shop of Bobby and Davey Allison in Hueytown, Alabama.
Amy Malgren: 33, from Denver is a T-10 paraplegic the result of an automobile
accident 16 years ago. With a degree in non-profit management she is an avid
competitor in sledge hockey and softball. She is the mother of three boys. (T-10
means the 10th vertabrae, top to bottom, had a thorasic injury.....simple
terms Amy is a parapelegic)
Kimberley Barreda: is a double above-the-knee amputee. She is editor of Chloe
magazine and associate editor of Active Living magazine as well as a
correspondent for xable.com. She also directs BLAST, a sports marketing and
scholarship program promoting and providing funding for integrated sports,
recreation and leisure for people with disabilities. Living in Montana, the
42-year-old former model and actress, Barreda is all about outdoor sports and
activities.
Domonic Corradin: is a writer, world traveler, adventurer, street rod customizer
and off-road enthusiast. In 1994 at the age of 16 the Michigan native was
paralyzed in a car accident while returning home from high school soccer
practice. “I push the limits every chance I can to learn about myself,” he
writes on his website. “No excuses.” extremeabilities.com.
Madonna Long: is a T-4 paraplegic (this means 4 th vertabrae (top to
bottom) T=Thorasic injury, or simple terms parapeligic with thorasic injury to
4th vertabrae) resulting from a school bus accident while she was in high school
in 1981. The mother of four and former Miss Wheelchair Nevada is creating a
website for mother’s who use wheelchairs (paramoms.com). Her personal site is
hotwheelwomen.com. She is a consumer advocate on disabled issues and a special
needs coordinator for emergency management. “It has been 18 years since that day
of 12-6-81 (accident) and I have done more with my life in this chair then I
would have walking ... I love my life. I hope others do to,” she writes.
Veronica Gonnello: is one of the able-bodied drivers in “The Show.” In fact she
is the show manager of the Abilities Expo (www.abilitiesexpo.com) , which is in its 23rd year and is held annually in three cities across America. The expo is considered vital for people
with disabilities, senior citizens and their caregivers since it brings together
consumers and providers of independent assisted living products and services.
She is a board member of the National Spinal Cord Injury Association. Gonnello
says, “Realize that the disability does not define you, but is just a part of
you,” Gonnello says. She is afflicted with a rare kidney disease. Driving? She
knows all about competitive driving since she commutes three miles from New
Jersey to Manhattan each day.
Sean Siff brings car control instruction and auto racing experience to the Accessible Racing team. As early as he can remember, Sean has always loved all types of auto racing. A love cultivated by many trips to the New Hampshire Motor Speedway during his formative years growing up outside Concord NH. While attending Bates College, Sean participated in both the Derek Daly and Richard Petty on-track racing experience. After graduation, Sean worked as a marketing department intern at the NHMS (then NHIS) Sean started club racing with the SCCA under the direction and support of the Bogart family. Sean started club racing in the ITA class driving a Nissan 240sx. Sean currently races a Spec Miata in the very competitive New England Region of the SCCA. Sean also provides on-track instruction through the Sport Car Drivers Association at NHMS, Limerock and Watkins Glen. Sean has spent 4 years as an advanced driver training instructor, helping teen drivers, corporations, police and emergency responders learn the art of accident avoidance. Sean began his career in driver instruction at Skid School and now provides instruction for InControl ADT. Sean works full time for iRacing.com, a premier motorsports simulation company located in Bedford MA. He is excited to help Accessible Racing grow and provide a great experience to a whole new group of drivers.
