Accessible Racing Great American Run competition is heating up..
NJ Ian James Brown graduated top of his class from Air Force Academy and flight school, injured in Iraq, returned to school to get his Masters at Harvard and currently is enrolled in Med School. He reports, "I got my Redline Time Attack License this weekend at NJ Motorsports Park. I did *okay*, I think I placed 4th overall in my category (running my stock Infiniti G35). I couldn't keep up with the BMW M3... but then again, if I had a $120,000 car also, I would have had a
better chance. I did beat a guy with a Dodge Viper ACR by over 7 seconds (he was in a higher class, but couldn't drive to save his soul). On a good note... I was the fastest disabled driver there!!! (admittedly, the ONLY disabled driver). I ran a 1:26 ... but that is with traction control on and not shifting (I left it in automatic rather than tiptronic)... the traction control was killing my lines... I would be smooth on my turns, not breaking past my entry... then all the sudden
mid-way to the apex my ABS would start jutting because I was turning so hard, which would throw off my contact patches in the corners... my Apex-to-Exits were pretty solid though!"
NY Ken Hulbert was involved in a motorcycle accident in May of 2004 that left him as a T-12 paraplegic. Prior to his accident Ken was an active volunteer fire fighter. He started at the age of 16 and held the rank of Capitan and was awarded fire fighter of the year for the town of Colonie NY in 2003. He is still active with the fire department helping where he can and still hold the office of training officer. His whole life I had been involved in racing,
growing up a family friend races and he would go to the track and help in the garage working and preparing the car. In 2003 he built mhis first race car and got behind the wheel. To this day he is involved in racing and has only missed one year, 2004 after his accident. At this pointhe has built three accessible dirt stock cars so he could continue racing at Albany-Saratoga Speedway, Devil's Bowl, Glenn Ridge Motorsports Park and starting this year at Lebanon Valley Speedway. He still does
all his own work on the race cars and have made a lot of friends at the race tracks he runs at over the years that give him a lot of credit for not giving up even with my disability. He works full time in the office for a towing company and prior to his accident I drove tow truck. I love what this organization is doing and would love nothing more then to be part of it and help it grow.
